The Battle of Agincourt, also known as the Battle of Azincourt, was fought on October 25, 1415, near Azincourt in northern France during the Hundred Years' War.
Henry V led his heavily outnumbered English army into battle after a grueling campaign through France. His force consisted largely of longbow archers supported by dismounted men-at-arms. Opposing them was a much larger French army commanded not by Charles VI, but by Charles I d'Albret and several prominent French nobles. The French army included men-at-arms, archers, crossbowmen, shield bearers, and cavalry.
Terrain and weather played a decisive role in the battle. Henry positioned his army between two wooded areas, protecting his flanks and funneling the advancing French forces into a narrow front. Heavy rain and freshly ploughed fields had turned the battlefield into deep, clinging mud, forcing the French to advance slowly and in tightly packed formations.
As the French cavalry began their assault, the English longbowmen unleashed devastating volleys of arrows that disrupted the attack and threw the advancing troops into confusion. Horses panicked in the mud, crashing back into their own lines and trampling French soldiers as they struggled forward. Exhausted and disorganized by the difficult terrain, the French men-at-arms finally reached the English line only to face continued arrow fire at close range and attacks on their flanks.
When many of the archers exhausted their arrows, they joined the fighting directly, attacking with hatchets, swords, mallets, and spears. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the English achieved a stunning victory. The battle shattered much of the French nobility, boosted English morale, and marked one of the most famous triumphs of English arms during the Hundred Years’ War.
