Today we are walking around what has become known as the Sledge Bunker on Ngesebus Island very near Peleliu. Marine Eugene Sledge documented the battle in his book With the Old Breed and the HBO mini series The Pacific portrayed the fight that took place at this bunker. On September 28, 1944 the 5th Marines made an amphibious landing on Ngesebus to capture the island. While the mortarmen of K/3/5 were setting up a position near a bunker that was reported to have been cleared earlier Marine Eugene Sledge heard Japanese troops inside the bunker. R. V. Burgin looked into one of the side bunker vents and saw a Japanese soldier. Sledge looking over a wall into the side entrance of the bunker is nearly killed when a Japanese soldier opens fire on him from inside. Sledge, Snafu and the rest of the mortarmen kept the Japanese troops contained inside the bunker as Burgin went to get assistance. Burgin returns with an LVT with a 75milimeter cannon that blasts open the side of the bunker. Flamethrowers flush out the remaining Japanese troops and the fight is over.
