The original road bridge spanning the Lower Rhine was completed in 1935. During Operation Market Garden, British paratroopers were tasked with capturing the bridge at Arnhem. Led by John Frost, the men of the British 2nd Parachute Battalion fought to secure and hold the bridge against overwhelming German resistance. After several days of intense combat, Frost and his troops were forced to surrender.
To prevent its use by German forces for counterattacks, the bridge was heavily damaged and ultimately destroyed in October 1944. A replacement bridge, designed in the same style as the original, was completed and reopened in 1948. In 1977, it was officially renamed the John Frost Bridge in honor of the British commander and the men who fought there during the Battle of Arnhem.
