Peter Helland talks about how he first confronted people his age arguing for the existence of Adam and Eve while he was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on New Year's Eve 1970. He lost interest in the game and instead engaged college age Christians attending a conference in downtown Dallas. Trying to prove to them that all mankind evolved from monkeys he went to the nearest bookstore and retrieved a copy of Desmond Morris's "Naked Ape" to back up the teaching he received in his geology class at Notre Dame University by Father Murphy. Unfortunately he did not make it back to the debate because he gets arrested for shoplifting the book "Naked Ape" and is thrown in the "Lee Harvey Oswald" jail in downtown Dallas. His roommate and friends bail him out the next morning for $25.
Finally after his junior year he has a complete change of mind and accepts the former traditional Church teaching (before Darwin) on Adam and Eve and the fall. His discussion here covers some of the history of theistic evolution that got much of its start in the Catholic Church at Notre Dame University herself through the priests Father Zahm and Father O'Brien. The Church's shift from Creationism to Evolutionism was semi-secretive, sudden and radical - bordering on heresy itself. The results have been disastrous for the Church as ideas have consequences.
