Dr. Robert Smith, Earl Townsend Jr. and Peter Helland discuss the community concerns in South Bend, Ind. Dr. Smith addresses the elephant in the room i.e. that our schools throughout the whole state of Indiana fail to carry out or even acknowledge what the primary purpose of public schools in Indiana is supposed to be. It states in the Indiana Constitution written in 1851 and continuing until today: "Article 8. Education. Section 1. Common school system. Section 1. "Knowledge and learning, generally diffused throughout a community, being essential to the preservation of a free government; it shall be the duty of the General Assembly to encourage, by all suitable means, moral... improvement..." Webster's 1828 dictionary stated: "1. ...The word moral ... has reference to the law of God as the standard by which their character is to be determined."
Earl Townsend Jr., a highly regarded successful coach and teacher, said that his main goal as a teacher and coach was teaching life skills and improving the moral character of his students.
