Is Thor ACTUALLY The Strongest Avenger?

After seeing the Doomsday Trailer and a very questionable lineup of heroes to take on Doom, it got me thinking….. Thor is going to have to do a whole lot of carrying in this film. Out of everyone in this lineup, Thor is going into this movie at the absolute pinnacle of his power and is one of the only remaining Avengers from Phase 1. Everyone else has pretty much died or retired or are just not present in the movie so, I wanted to go ahead and go over Thor's journey throughout the MCU, and determine if he truly deserves the title of strongest Avenger. And after we look at his history we can see where he stacks up against the other avengers that are considered the most powerful, like Captain Marvel , Doctor Strange , Wanda and many others. Starting off we have Phase 1 Thor who from the get go was stated to be pretty much the strongest or right next to the strongest in terms of physical power. It’s stated by the time of Avengers 1 that he’s the only individual capable of matching the hulk in terms of power, and while I do think in general it’s consistent for Hulk to be physically stronger than Thor, Thor 100% has to be in that same ball park. With his handy weapon Mjolnir, an enchanted hammer that’s capable of channeling Thor's power, he can shoot powerful blasts of lightning that can even bring down Chitauri Leviathans. Even while he’s nerfed he’s arguably the MVP of the movie and he has just as many statements as Hulk when comparing their strength to the avengers. And as a side note, this version of Thor that’s already a match for Hulk and is consistently portrayed to be at the top, is actually nerfed due to his trip from Asgard to Earth when attempting to retrieve the tesseract from Loki. Phase 2 Thor is a bit different since we see him being tested a lot more physically in his second movie. He’d go up against Malikeith and his goon Kurse, who was a physical threat to the God Of Hammers. After surviving threats such as the Dark Elves the time of Age of Ultron he should be at the peak of his game, surpassing his previous Avengers self as he’s no longer being nerfed. And funnily enough in Ragnarok as well, this is the movie where Thor truly starts to reach a new realm of power. Thor's main journey in this movie is to obviously show that he in fact isn’t defined by Mjolnir, and his true power was always something he had inside him. This of course leads into Infinity War, where we see Thor himself withstanding torture from the power stone before then going on a journey to try and defeat Thanos. This feat to me has never been that impressive especially considering he pretty much would've died had it not been for Stormbreaker saving him but, the amount of energy Thor would've at least needed to take to make the weapon would have been more than enough to destroy entire Islands to even small countries. After this of course he becomes stronger than ever, being an actual threat to the mad titan and surpassing the likes of the Black Order. This is important of course because a lot of people will look at this feat and suggest Thor is like… universal or something which simply isn't the case. Because of Thanos being off guard and the weapon already able to bypass the Gauntlet itself, it does recontexualize this “feat” to being more so of Thor getting the jump on Thanos when he was vulnerable. This is super important because most of Thor's feats on Thanos in retrospect aren't that much more impressive, and in terms of raw stats Thor lowkey just peaks here until Endgame when it comes to physical strength. He's in the same league as Carol or Wanda in Endgame, who overpowered the Mad Titans base form. I will say it's harder to argue Thor is on this tier just from pure feats alone, but I would say due to being so much stronger compared to his endgame self, it allows the conversation of Thor beating Thanos being on the table. With that being said, I think from what we saw in the trailer, Thor being at this level of power or a threat to Thanos himself seems to be consistent, as their next obstacle is someone seemingly on another level. But despite getting diffed by the move Aizen used, this version of Thor should be far stronger than ever, and is at the very worst in the same realm as the top tier avengers like Wanda and Carol. Sentry is a threat that is on a whole different level, especially considering he’s the only top tier who blitzes an avenger this bad. So to answer the title question in short words, he technically IS the strongest. But in retrospect he represents what the strongest should be capable of within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s surpassed his previous obstacles before, and at the very worst if his biggest threat were to Return, he’d be ready to take them head on… with the exception of Doom of course.
