MOUNT EVEREST CROWDS
The world's tallest mountain, Mt Everest, has been extra busy lately and some people reckon it's getting too crowded. Last week, there was a record number of people to climb to the top of Everest on a single day. Right now, anyone can apply for a permit to climb Mt Everest, as long as they're happy to fork out more than twenty thousands bucks to the Nepalese Government. But there's only a short slice of the year where the conditions are actually safe or slightly less dangerous to head up. When you get enough keen climbers it's common to see long lines, which can sometimes be dangerous and mean climbers are exposed to harsh weather conditions for longer periods. One sherpa, Karmi Rita, has been to the top more than anyone and he reckons the Nepalese government should be doing more to make sure that this epic climb can continue to be done safely.
STATE OF ORIGIN
The men's State of Origin has officially kicked off with a miracle victory. Despite some less than ideal weather, fans were out in full force for Game 1 last night which turned out to be quite the jaw dropper. The Maroons made their mark from the get go, blitzing their way to a 20-0 lead after 20 minutes. But after Kalyn Ponga was dramatically sent off for a shoulder charge, the game turned on its head, with the Blues pulling off the biggest comeback in State of Origin history. The icing on the cake was a last minute try from James Tedesco, which sealed the deal for the win.
RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN KIDS
We meet some kids whose school has just launched its Reconciliation Action Plan, or RAP. It's a formal document that outlines the things they're doing to work towards reconciliation. Part of the schools RAP included inviting a First Nations artist to paint a mural on a school building, changing the school sports teams to reflect Kaurna language and create a bush tucker garden filled with native plants.
DARWIN STREET ART
Darwin is claiming the title of the "street art capital" of Australia. For every 950 residents, Darwin has about one piece of outdoor art which is higher than anywhere else in the country, including Melbourne which is known world wide for its vibrant array of street art. Right now the Darwin Street Art Festival is on, which will see 23 new murals added to the streets taking the total count to 167.
WILLIE WAGTAIL ART
Over the past few years, Torquay on Victoria's Surf coast has turned into a scavenger hunt for locals to find paintings of Willie Wagtails. The art is created by Mike Mclean, who uses off cuts from other art pieces to create the small murals which can not only be found here but right around the world.
