IG NOBELS
The 36th Ig Nobel Prizes have been announced! These awards are all about recognising the funniest discoveries in science. The Ig Nobels, which you could call the sillier cousin of the Nobel Prizes, have been held every year since 1991. They're put on by the folks behind a science magazine called the Annals of Improbable Research. There are categories like economics, peace, and physics. But these awards celebrate scientific achievements that first make you laugh, then make you think. In economics, the winners looked to answer the question, who is most likely to steal candy from children? For chemistry, the award was given to scientists who found milk proteins from some cockroaches has three times as much energy as cows milk. In medicine, the winners studied the art of nose blowing. In the Soil Science category, researchers tested soil health by burying underwear in countries all around the world. And in physics, scientists designed splash free urinals. The winners get this, a mushroom on top of a foot mounted on a slice of blue cheese. And of course, the honour of being recognised by science's silliest awards.
EL NIÑO
The World Meteorological Organisation has warned the world is facing a 'Supersized' El Niño. An El Nino is a weather phenomenon marked by warmer than normal waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. The UN weather agency says this El Niño is expected to peak later this year, and could be the strongest ever recorded! Experts warn that could raise the risk of more extreme weather events around the world.
GEORGIE TAKEOVER
Now we're going to meet one of the winners of the ABC's Takeover competition! Georgie from Baddaginnie in Victoria is going to tell us all about her passion for farming and fashion.
EMU CHASE
First up, to an emu on the run in New South Wales. A police officer was filmed chasing after the bird, which was on the road blocking traffic. According to reports, it's unclear where the emu came from and where it went. But this video has gone viral online, with many finding the chase quite amusing.
DONALD TRUMP COINS
Now to the US, where a bunch of new coins have just been minted, with the President's face on them. It's amusing because it's the first time in 100 years that a living president has appeared on US currency. 9 million of them have been minted, and they've already sold out.
HOT AIR BALLOON
And finally, to a hot air balloon festival in Czechia. Around 45 balloons took to the skies, to kick off the four day long event, now in its eighth year.
