OPT-IN ALGORITHMS
Algorithms play a huge role in what we see on social media. And while they can feed us content we really like, they can also expose us to some pretty harmful things. Believe it or not, social media hasn't always been this way. When Facebook and Instagram first started, users would only see content from the people they followed. And if you scrolled for long enough, you'd actually run out of new stuff to see. But now, social media algorithms decide a lot of what we see and in what order, based on things like our behaviour, gender and age - and extreme and harmful content can make its way to young people. This is where the non profit organisation, Teach Us consent is stepping in, with a campaign called "fix our feeds". It's pushing the government to force social media companies to make algorithms something you have to "opt-in" to, not something you're given by default. The government says it's looking at how they can give social media users more control over their algorithms, and says more details will be included in draft Digital Duty of Care laws that will be released later this month.
EU APP RULES
ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox have all been placed under stricter rules by the European Union. The three apps each reach at least 45 million users a month in the EU. That means that the platforms are now so big that they fall under the category of 'very large', according to the EU's Digital Services Act. ChatGPT has been classed as a very large online search engine, while Reddit and Roblox have been classed as 'very large online platforms'. They'll now have four months to comply with some extra rules, including making their platforms safer for young people.
CAMERON'S SPUD BUSINESS
We're going to meet one of the winners of the ABC's Takeover competition - Cameron from Burnie in Tassie. He's got a passion for farming and spuds.
MESSI TRIBUTE
A chef in Argentina is busy making a masterpiece. A photo of the legendary soccer player Messi sits above his workstation. And yes, he is attempting to make a portrait of Messi out of meat. It's a bit of a fun creation that has gone viral online, after news broke of Messi's retirement. He was the captain of the Argentinian team for 15 years, leading the team to victory at the 2022 World Cup.
SPACE WALK
In space, astronauts from NASA and the European space agency are carrying out maintenance on the International Space Station. They call these little missions "space walks" and this one lasted 6 hours and 49 minutes - and saw them replace a camera, and install a new retro-reflector.
