Tormach Inc. | Is it a Good Idea to Upgrade to Servos @tormachinc | Uploaded May 2019 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
Are servo motors a waste of money. Jason Pulvermacher demonstrates why you may want to upgrade from stepper motors. For the vast majority of machinists it's a no brainer. Servos are just faster, and will save a lot of milling time. They can easily, more than double feed rates. The higher acceleration rates help CNC machines get up to speed faster. Servo motors operate with less noise than steppers. They also close the feed back loop to the CNC control system, like Tormach's PathPilot. What servos don't do is increase the accuracy of the CNC machine. That's just a myth. Accuracy is more influenced by the way your machine is installed. If you take the time to make sure all the components are installed correctly, and you properly keep up that maintenance, then you will be well on your way to creating accurate parts.
