Body Cam Video of Intoxicated Boater Instantly Regretting speeding Under Low Bridge. On March 9, 2024, an officer of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to a report of a boating accident in Palm City, FL. The accident occurred under the Palm City Bridge, with the response directed to the Palm City Boat Ramp, located at 2701 SW Cornell Ave, Palm City, FL 34990.
The operator of the vessel and its occupants were traveling southwest under the Palm City Bridge when the operator attempted to navigate the vessel under the bridge's low fishing pier. During this attempt, one of the occupants struck her head on the pier.
One of the occupants suffered a significant injury to the back of her head and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach. She was treated for a slight brain bleed but was reported to be in stable condition. The injury was not classified as serious bodily injury (SBI). The navigation light on the bow of the vessel was observed to be broken and bent, suggesting it may have struck the bridge during the incident.
Upon arrival, an additional officer observed signs of impairment in the operator, who was subsequently arrested. Recorded statements were obtained from two occupants. During one interview, an occupant stated that the group had left their home, spent time at a local sandbar, and then visited other locations before heading back. The occupant explained that the operator had consumed alcohol and attempted to navigate the low fishing pier under the bridge, which was not designed for vessel passage. This action was described as a risky maneuver they had performed before. The injured occupant reportedly failed to duck in time or lost her balance, leading to her injury.
In a separate interview, another occupant corroborated the timeline of events but stated that no alcohol consumption by the operator was observed. This occupant noted that she and another individual had attempted to warn the operator to slow down as they approached the low pier.
Based on the circumstances, including the injury, violation of navigation Rule 5 (proper look-out), and evidence that the operator was aware or should have been aware of the risks associated with attempting to navigate under the fishing pier, charges were filed against the operator. These charges include:
• Reckless or careless operation of a vessel (327.33)
• Boating under the influence
• Failure to provide a breath sample
