Interment of a Cursed Poet
By Charles Baudelaire
Translated by A.Z. Foreman

If, on a night of dismal black,
Some Christian has the charity
To dump your vaunted corpse out back
Behind some tenement's debris,

When the chaste stars, as darkness ebbs,
Close all their heavy eyes for dawn,
The spiders there will weave their webs
And there the vipers hatch their spawn

Your dead damned head now underground
Will have to listen all year round
To how the wolfpack howls and grieves,

To the mad yowls of starveling witches,
To lecherous old sons of bitches
Tossing, and thoughts of petty thieves.

The Original:

Sépulture

Si par une nuit lourde et sombre
Un bon chrétien, par charité,
Derrière quelque vieux décombre
Enterre votre corps vanté,

A l'heure où les chastes étoiles
Ferment leurs yeux appesantis,
L'araignée y fera ses toiles,
Et la vipère ses petits;

Vous entendrez toute l'année
Sur votre tête condamnée
Les cris lamentables des loups

Et des sorcières faméliques,
Les ébats des vieillards lubriques
Et les complots des noirs filous.
