Improvisation of the day! Great way to start the day with an E minor jam:) When I left Juilliard, I could play the most difficult and challenging classical music from Stravinski to Bartok to Ligeti, and I loved it all! Yet, I could not create my own music. Improvisation is the backbone for all composers. In fact, in the classical world of the 1800’s and 1900’s Violin concertos had “cadenzas” where the soloist improvises in the style of the composer of the concerto! So, this was a common technique hundreds of years ago….then it disappeared….I’ll never forget inviting Joshua Bell to one of my Trans Siberian Orchestra concerts at Madison Square Garden, and him lamenting that he wished he could improvise…..Well we can! In my book: “Electrify Your Strings” introduces a concept call “the moveable grid on the finger board which allows the string player to navigate the location of triads, scales and chords. The building blocks of music. Rock on!
