Rania's original work 'Impressions’ won first prize in the Release the Notes category of Guildhall Young Artists (GYA) composition competition, RELEASE 2026.
Rania, from Junior Guildhall, says: "This piece reflects my personal experience of a time of peace, openness, and resolution following a period of grief and uncertainty. I approached this piece rather expansively, without the constraints of genre, to take listeners through an emotional landscape. The main motif lingers throughout the piece, as an ever-present memory of the darker period. It begins with delicate phrases, flowing piano harmonies, and lyrical saxophone melodies. The shifting colours and textures, coupled with the swelling of the saxophone lines, create contrasts that symbolise the ebb and flow of emotions. As the music develops, the intensity slowly builds toward a passionate climax, symbolising the final brilliance of clarity before settling gently into a quieter state of regrowth and resolution."
The category judge for Release the Notes was Tom Bruton, saxophonist and owner of Saxtet Publications.
