Roberto Gonzalez-Monjas - Conductor

Beethoven composed the third of his nine symphonies in Vienna in 1803, and - after several try-outs with the private orchestra of his patron Prince Lobkowitz - conducted its first public performance in April 1805. At the time of its composition Beethoven called it 'Buonaparte', in homage to Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military leader and First Consul. But in 1804, when he was given the news that Napoleon had had himself proclaimed Emperor, Beethove, in a racge at such betraylal of the ideals of the Revolution, tore up the title page of the manuscript score. The work was eventially published with the title Sinfonia eroica, or 'Heroic Symphony', and the sub-title 'to celebrate the memory of a great man'. In fact, Napoleon was still alive and active at that time. But Beethoven seems to have been thinking of him more as an archetype embodying the classical tradition of heroism, celebrated in life, commemorated in death, and finally received into the pantheon of the immortals
