sew_through_time | I made a bra from 1906! -sewing from a brassiere patent @sewthroughtime | Uploaded April 2021 | Updated October 2024, 39 minutes ago.
In this video I make a brassiere from 1906 to wear both with edwardian and 1910s fashions. My design is based on this patent
patents.google.com/patent/US817653
Starting this project I had no idea how well this would work, if at all but the design seemed interesting so I took this as an experiment. The end result was well worth the gamble and supports me better than any modern bra! though I do think that is more about the combination of the corset and brassiere that makes it so supportive. The brassiere gently lifts and keeps to top portion of the breast tissue in place whereas the corset keeps the bottom portion from moving.
For my fabric I used a cotton rib knit from my stash and a vintage bedsheet scrap, the boning is 4mm synthetic whalebone. It closes in the front with hook and eye tape.
