Cycling the world - Asia: episode 47
The day begins peacefully beside a dry river in the Omani desert until I discover the area is crawling with large ticks that seem determined to reach me. I pack up in record time and get back on the road, only to face another problem. A petrol station marked on the map simply doesn’t exist, leaving me dangerously low on food and water with another seventy kilometres to the next one. As the desert wind grows into a relentless wall of sand and heat, every kilometre becomes a battle. After seeking shelter first in a prayer room and then in a mosque, where the imam kindly offers me water, food and a safe place to sleep, I continue before sunrise while the wind finally eases. The journey takes me through Sinaw for a well deserved resupply, including my first taste of camel milk, before I return to my original bikepacking route towards the mountains and end another unforgettable day camping beneath a dramatic Omani sky.
