Deep in the middle of Kazakhstan, far from any roads, there's a big and mysterious monument called the Soyuz 11 Memorial.
In all of history, only three people have died beyond Earth. Out of nearly 440 folks sent into space, only 18 didn't make it back, and just three of them, the Soyuz 11 crew, died more than 50 miles above Earth.
The Soyuz 11 was a Russian spaceship that launched in 1971. It was the only mission to ever visit the first space station, Salyut 1. The crew set a world record for spending 22 days in space, which was later broken by an American mission called "Skylab 2."
The mission had some problems, like a fire and strange vibrations, but it went pretty well until it was time to come back to Earth.
Sadly, right after leaving the space station, the three crew members suffocated. This happened because of a small mistake – they opened two bolts at the same time, which caused too much pressure and damaged the spaceship's pressure valve.
The pressure inside the spaceship dropped to zero in just three and a half minutes. The spaceship landed in a remote part of Kazakhstan, and a team found the lifeless bodies of the crew members.
To remember them, the Russian government built a big black monument at the exact spot where the Soyuz 11 landed. It has three sides, each with a picture of one of the crew members. They made it in 1973 to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for space exploration.
Sadly, this monument only lasted for 39 years. In 2012, it was damaged by some visitors. Now, a smaller monument with an inscription honors the crew's achievement.
The best way to keep the memory of the Soyuz 11 crew alive is in the hearts and minds of those who remember their sacrifice as we keep exploring space.
