Hyderabadi Mirchi ka Salan - Spicy Pepper Curry Recipe

Wash and dry the peppers, then slit them vertically. Grind the peanuts, sesame seeds, and coconut into a powder and set aside. Mix tamarind paste, ginger, turmeric, and red chili powder with 1/4 cup of water and set aside. Heat oil in a flat frying pan over medium heat and stir-fry the peppers until they are light brown all around. Remove the peppers and place them on a paper towel.

In the same pan with the remaining oil, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once the seeds crackle, add besan and nigella seeds, stirring for about a minute. Add the peanut powder and stir-fry for about two minutes until the mixture turns golden brown. Add the spice paste and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring until the spice mix starts to release oil. Add salt, sugar, and 3 cups of water, then bring the gravy to a boil. Lower the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 6-8 minutes.

Add the stir-fried peppers to the gravy, sprinkle with garam masala, cover the pan, and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the gravy thickens. Serve Mirchi ka Salan hot over plain rice or with biryani.
