The life of Howard Robard Hughes Jr. remains one of the most compelling intersections of extreme wealth, aeronautical brilliance, and personal enigma in the history of the twentieth century. Inheriting the prosperous Hughes Tool Company at age nineteen following the untimely passing of his parents, Hughes utilized the massive revenues generated by the patented Sharp-Hughes rock bit to finance daring ventures across entertainment, commercial transport, and military aviation.
Establishing the Hughes Aircraft Company alongside skilled mechanic Glenn Odekirk, Hughes directed the engineering of the H-1 Racer. On August 18, 1935, Hughes piloted the craft to a world landplane speed record of 352 miles per hour, followed by a transcontinental record flight from Los Angeles to Newark in seven hours and twenty-eight minutes. His global flight in 1938 aboard a modified Lockheed 14 Super Electra circumscribed the Northern Hemisphere in three days, nineteen hours, and seven minutes, earning him international acclaim and the prestigious Harmon Trophy presented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
As World War II expanded across the globe, Hughes redirected his manufacturing infrastructure to support national defense. In collaboration with industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, Hughes undertook the construction of the colossal Hughes H-4 Hercules, designated HK-1. Designed to transport seven hundred and fifty combat troops or two thirty-ton Sherman tanks across the submarine-patrolled Atlantic, the flying boat utilized non-strategic birch veneers bonded with synthetic resins through the revolutionary DuraMold process. Engineered within a climate-controlled assembly hangar in Culver City, the Hercules possessed a wingspan of three hundred and twenty feet, powered by eight Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines.
Concurrently, Hughes developed the XF-11 photographic reconnaissance aircraft, derived from the earlier D-2 bomber concept. During its initial test flight on July 7, 1946, a rear propeller failure on the right engine led to a devastating crash in Beverly Hills, inflicting catastrophic injuries upon Hughes that catalyzed a lifelong dependence on narcotics. Despite the cancellation of wartime production orders, Hughes completed both prototypes, culminating in the dramatic public hearings before the Senate War Investigating Committee chaired by Senator Owen Brewster in 1947, followed immediately by the historic maiden flight of the H-4 Hercules in Long Beach Harbor on November 2, 1947.
