The origins of modern aerial combat were established in the dangerous, experimental skies over Europe between 1914 and 1918. The vintage archival footage presented in this documentary has been upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to convey the physical realities of early military flight. In the summer of 1914, Oxford classmates Roy and Monty Rutledge travel through Germany with their companion Karl Arnstedt, immersed in peacetime camaraderie before international tensions abruptly fracture European peace. When war is declared, Karl is recalled to the German military machine, while Roy promptly enlists in Britain’s Royal Flying Corps, soon followed by his reluctant brother Monty.
Flight training introduces the young aviators to the unforgiving nature of rotary engines and delicate canvas airframes. As the conflict expands, the threat shifts directly to the British homeland during the nocturnal Zeppelin raids over London. High above the Thames, rigid airships navigate through heavy cloud cover while RFC home defense squadrons scramble into the dark without modern navigation aids. Karl Arnstedt oversees the bomb release over central London before his crew makes desperate ballast sacrifices to evade British interceptors, ending in the airship's dramatic destruction over the English countryside.
Deployed to the aerodromes of the Western Front in France, the Rutledge brothers experience the relentless attrition of dawn patrols and nighttime sorties. Mounting psychological strain grips the squadron as pilots face mechanical failure, anti-aircraft fire, and hostile pursuit squadrons without parachutes. When Allied command identifies a heavily defended central munitions dump at Sprague, a critical tactical opportunity emerges: a captured German heavy bomber is prepared for a covert strike to neutralize enemy artillery supplies ahead of a major brigade assault.
Volunteering for the hazardous flight, Roy and Monty infiltrate enemy airspace at dawn, successfully destroying the Sprague depot. Intercepted by Imperial German Air Service fighters, their aircraft is shot down behind enemy lines. Captured and interrogated by German officers who demand information regarding the Allied ground offensive, the brothers face an agonizing moral and military test. Confronting immediate execution as disguised combatants, they endure the ultimate dilemma between personal survival and protecting the 3,000 advancing infantrymen of the 7th Brigade.
