The trajectory of Russian civil aviation began in the final years of the Imperial era, spanning vast distances across tundra, steppe, and dense forests. Restored archival footage brings the early years of Soviet flight to light, highlighting the pioneering work of Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev at the Central Institute of Aero and Hydrodynamics (TsAGI). From early single-engine metallic aircraft like the ANT-1 to the massive ANT-20 Maxim Gorky showcase plane, the Tupolev Design Bureau established itself as the paramount force in Soviet aerospace engineering. Despite surviving political purges during the late 1930s and manufacturing vital military bombers throughout World War II, Tupolev transitioned seamlessly into the postwar jet age, developing the Tu-104 passenger airliner and laying the foundation for commercial supersonic travel.
As global civil aviation turned its sights toward speeds beyond Mach 1, Soviet leadership prioritized the creation of a dedicated supersonic transport. The Tu-144 program represented the culmination of decades of aerodynamic research, utilizing a slender ogival delta wing and variable-geometry intakes. Intelligence gathering alongside indigenous aerodynamic testing allowed Soviet engineers to overcome significant thermal and structural obstacles. On December 31, 1968, the Tu-144 achieved its historic maiden flight, beating its Anglo-French competitor into the air by two months. Subsequent refinements, including retractable forward canards, improved low-speed handling characteristics during landing approaches.
Despite early developmental victories, the Tu-144 encountered severe hurdles. The tragic crash during a flight demonstration at the 1973 Paris Air Show stunned international observers and delayed commercial introduction. Limited passenger operations began in late 1977 across the Moscow to Alma-Ata route, but high operating costs, excessive interior noise, and shifting economic priorities under Leonid Brezhnev led to official cancellation in 1983. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the aircraft found a final purpose in the mid-1990s as a high-speed flying laboratory for a joint research initiative between NASA and Russian aerospace entities, gathering critical aerodynamic data for future supersonic designs.
