In the skies, elite pilots flying high-speed Hawker Tempests, North American P-51 Mustangs, and advanced Supermarine Spitfires intercepted nearly 2,000 pilotless bombers. Of the approximately 8,000 launchings directed toward England, Allied defenses successfully neutralized half, though the surviving impacts caused immense destruction across London’s urban landscape, claiming thousands of casualties and damaging over a million structures.

Behind the operational deployment of the V-1 lay years of rigorous German aeronautical and scientific research. Specialized institutes investigated internal combustion dynamics, utilizing single-cylinder test benches to analyze fuel-air mixture formation, pre-ignition, knocking, and combustion chamber geometry. In Stuttgart, state-of-the-art altitude simulation chambers subjected multi-cylinder engines to sub-zero temperatures and thin, low-pressure air matching operational flight ceilings. Simultaneously, the Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Luftfahrt (DVL) conducted extensive materials testing, applying photoelastic optical methods to visualize internal stress lines within airframe metals, loading thin fuselage sheet metal shells to their ultimate buckling thresholds, and testing shock absorber struts with slow-motion drop equipment.

High-speed cameras recording at 800 frames per second captured propeller failures on spin test stands, while hydrodynamic drop tanks evaluated seaplane hull floats against extreme water impacts. Advanced radio navigation research conducted at Oberpfaffenhofen established crucial principles for direction-finding loop antennas, blind flight, and radio triangulation. Concurrently, secret launch trials at Peenemünde tested the Fi-103 from concrete catapult ramps and in aerial releases beneath Focke-Wulf FW-200 Condor heavy aircraft.
