In early 1946, the newly established Strategic Air Command identified an urgent operational requirement for a jet-propelled strategic penetration fighter capable of providing continuous escort coverage for heavy bombers such as the B-29 and B-36. McDonnell answered with the swept-wing XF-88 Voodoo prototype, which completed its maiden flight in October 1948. Although the XF-88A won the subsequent 1950 fly-off evaluation, fiscal constraints forced an immediate cancellation. Lessons from the Korean War soon proved that existing straight-wing fighters lacked the performance to survive against swept-wing threats, while standard tactical jets lacked adequate range. The vintage archival footage featured in this comprehensive documentary has been upscaled and restored, appearing in exceptional colorized versions to document the complete development cycle of the aircraft. Redesignated the F-101 Voodoo in November 1951, the aircraft became the largest single-seat fighter built up to that point, measuring over sixty-seven feet in length and grossing more than forty-eight thousand pounds. Early flight testing at Edwards Air Force Base by chief test pilot Robert C. Little demonstrated remarkable climb rates and speeds past Mach 1.5, yet also uncovered dangerous aerodynamic pitch-up tendencies that could precipitate unrecoverable flat spins. Air Force directives mandated pilot ejection below 15,000 feet during uncontrolled pitch-up events. McDonnell implemented roughly two thousand engineering modifications, incorporating an automated stick pusher, revised inlet geometry, and the distinctive high T-tail stabilizer.
As strategic priorities evolved, Tactical Air Command integrated the F-101A and strengthened F-101C as high-speed nuclear strike fighter-bombers equipped with low-altitude bombing systems. Simultaneously, the unarmed RF-101A and RF-101C variants established the benchmark for supersonic tactical reconnaissance. On November 27, 1957, Operation Sun Run proved transcontinental endurance when RF-101s set new coast-to-coast records, followed on December 12, 1957, by Major Adrian Drew setting a world speed record of 1,207.6 miles per hour in Operation Firewall. Operational RF-101Cs subsequently conducted hazardous low-altitude photo runs during the Cuban Missile Crisis and served as frontline reconnaissance pathfinders in Southeast Asia.
