The history of military aviation during the early twentieth century was fundamentally shaped by the necessity to patrol and control the world's vast oceans. However, as geopolitical tensions escalated, the military recognized the urgent need for airborne early warning systems. The Consolidated Aircraft Corporation answered this call with the PBY Catalina, an all-metal monoplane capable of remaining aloft for over fifteen hours and covering a range of nearly four thousand miles. When the United States was thrust into World War II following the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, the Pacific fleet was caught off guard, and many patrol planes were destroyed. Despite this crippling blow, the Catalina squadrons quickly regrouped and exacted their revenge. At the pivotal Battle of Midway in 1942, PBYs were the first to spot the advancing Japanese task force, allowing American carriers to launch a decisive counterattack that shifted the momentum of the Pacific war.
Across the Atlantic, Great Britain faced an existential threat from German U-boats aiming to strangle the island nation's supply lines. The Royal Air Force's Coastal Command deployed the Short Sunderland, a robust four-engine flying boat bristling with up to a dozen machine guns. This heavily armed patrol bomber earned the nickname "Flying Porcupine" from Luftwaffe pilots who learned to give it a wide berth. Alongside British and American forces, Norwegian exile squadrons operated the Northrop N-3PB from remote bases in Iceland, escorting vital convoys through the treacherous North Atlantic. As the conflict progressed, larger and more capable aircraft were introduced, including the impressive four-engine PB2Y Coronado and the Martin Mariner. Meanwhile, German engineers developed colossal reconnaissance vehicles like the Blohm & Voss BV 238, the largest flying boat built during the war, which was tragically destroyed by American fighters before it could fully realize its bomber potential.
