On December 7, 1941, the strike on Pearl Harbor plunged the United States into a global struggle against the Axis coalition. With its battle line shattered, the Pacific Fleet faced immediate enemy dominance. In the Atlantic, German U-boat wolf packs operating from occupied France and Norway preyed on Allied convoys, threatening vital Lend-Lease shipments to Britain and Russia. Fighting a two-ocean war with a peacetime fleet, the Navy improvised coastal defenses with blimps, civilian patrol craft, and PBY bombers while shielding convoys running the perilous gauntlet to Murmansk and Malta.
Axis war plans envisioned a massive pincer movement, with Japanese armies driving through Malaya, Singapore, and the East Indies toward India, while the Wehrmacht pushed through the Caucasus. Admiral Chester Nimitz swiftly countered, mounting carrier strikes against the Marshall and Gilbert Islands to safeguard supply corridors to Australia. In May and June 1942, the decisive engagements of the Coral Sea and Midway unfolded. At Midway, Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers devastated the Imperial Japanese Navy, sinking four fleet carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu—and permanently reversing naval air superiority in the Pacific.
The Allied counteroffensive struck back across both hemispheres. In August 1942, the First Marine Division landed on Guadalcanal and Tulagi, enduring months of punishing jungle combat and nocturnal sea clashes in Ironbottom Sound. In the deep Pacific, American fleet submarines penetrated enemy waters, sinking over a million tons of vital merchant shipping. Simultaneously, Operation Torch in North Africa proved the efficacy of joint amphibious planning, neutralizing Axis coastal resistance while American shipyards mobilized an unprecedented industrial output of Iowa-class battleships and Essex carriers.
The island-hopping campaign systematically pierced Japan’s defensive perimeter at Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, and Guam, enabling General Douglas MacArthur’s return to the Philippines. Despite ferocious kamikaze attacks off Okinawa and desperate resistance on Iwo Jima, Allied naval and air forces closed the ring. Boeing B-29 Superfortress raids, naval bombardments by the Third Fleet, the atomic missions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Soviet entry into Manchuria compelled total capitulation, culminating in the unconditional surrender announced by President Harry S. Truman on August 14, 1945.
