Toronto Western Hospital is just commissioning the world's largest wastewater heating system. Yup, the hospital will be getting 90% of its heat from the sewer system beneath the streets of Toronto.
If that sounds crappy, consider the hospital will get upgraded heating systems and save $700,000 per year in operating costs.
We talk to Ed Rubenstein, the VP of Noventa Energy, the company building the $43 million project.
Oh, that's not where Ed worked when the project began. He actually spent 20 years working for the University Hospital Network in Toronto and he was the guy who found Noventa and worked with them to develop the idea of a heat exchange system that gets its heat from wastewater.
The project uses next generation technology and the City of Toronto is so jazzed about the potential for wastewater heating they have created a searchable, online waste water map so you can find out if your project could use wastewater heat.
