Film Score and More | How To Train Your Dragon: Dragon Battle - Piano Cover/Music Video (HD) @FilmScoreandMore | Uploaded March 2019 | Updated October 2024, 2 minutes ago.
This is my piano cover of John Powell’s song “Dragon Battle” from Dreamworks’ “How To Train Your Dragon” synced up with the scene from the movie. The first line of this description exists because adding keywords may slightly help in boosting the relevance of this video when it comes to YouTube searches.

I honestly never expected to get much done on this song or to have so much fun with it. I first put it into Notion 6 (potential keyword) two summers ago using Alex Sheen’s transcription of the song (linked below). While his transcription and his listening skills are great, it just wasn’t right yet. The software made all the staccato notes extremely short and it was missing other elements to give it the right sound and feeling; it needed more. His tempo instructions were also vague, so I had to find the initial tempo for myself (about 131 BPM) and then I had to find at what points it changes and by how much (it gets up to about 138 BPM and then slows to hold the final chord longer). It should also be noted that the film version of each song is usually slightly different from what’s on the soundtrack. In this one, I had to take the turning point of the song (where the Dragons’ Theme ends and the heroic theme begins) and make some big changes there. The tempo now dips from 131 to 110 in that spot. Please also keep in mind that my solutions aren’t necessarily the solution, just whatever worked from a lot of trial and error.

About a week ago, this song file was about the same as it was almost two years ago. I decided to take another look at it and I found an alternate transcription for brass by The Backpacking Trombonist (linked below). Suddenly I had what I needed to fill in some of the missing sounds and I was able to work out some of the other details, like the violins earlier in the song, some extra percussion and even the anvil. I made a few more changes like always; the entire melody upon the fiery entrance of the Monstrous Nightmare is now accented and I slightly raised the dynamics when Stoick throws the net. It was fun to do this one but it does start to get old when I have to listen to something so loud and intense again and again. Especially when I have to sync it with the scene and strain to hear the music over the earsplitting sound of a dive bombing Night Fury.

I do not own the rights to this song, movie, these characters, etc. All belongs to John Powell, Dreamworks, and maybe Cressida Cowell? She probably sold them over ten years ago but the point is I do not claim ownership of any of this. No copyright infringement intended.
