According to Art of Knotting and Splicing, by Day; United States Naval Institute , The Anchor Bend is an excellent example of a good secure knot, simplicity in the way that it is tied and also has a good knot strength rating.
For the purist knotter of this world, you would say that this is a hitch rather than a bend. I did read somewhere a while ago that it was called a bend by sailors, as the rope was bent to a ring to form the knot??
You should be aware that this knot can become jammed when using some modern materials. However, if the Anchor Bend has only had a moderate weight on the line, it is still easy to untie.
In the purest form the Anchor Bend or Fisherman's Bend is created once the working end has been passed through the original turns. However, for additional security the working end can be half hitched one or more times around the standing end. This also has the advantage of neatly disposing of a flapping working end.
Another way of tying the Anchor Bend is to attach a Bowline with the working end to the standing end, rather than the two half hitches.
