How to Test if a Refrigerator Door Seal Is Bad
This is a great simple refrigerator troubleshooting video because you can demonstrate the test in just a few minutes.
The Dollar-Bill Test
1. Open the refrigerator door.
2. Place a dollar bill halfway between the door gasket and the refrigerator cabinet.
Put it near the top, middle, and bottom of the gasket.
3. Close the door on the dollar bill.
The gasket should grip the bill.
4. Try pulling the bill out.
Strong resistance: The seal is probably making good contact.
Slides out very easily: That particular section of the gasket may not be sealing properly.
Check Several Locations
Don't test just one spot. Move the dollar bill around the entire perimeter:
Top
Both sides
Bottom
Corners
A gasket can seal well in one area but have a gap in another area.
Look at the Gasket
While you're checking it, look for:
Cracks or tears
Hard or brittle rubber
Warping
Flattened sections
Gasket pulling away from the door
Gaps between the gasket and cabinet
Also make sure nothing is preventing the door from closing completely.
An Even Better Test: The Flashlight Test
For a particularly bad seal, put a flashlight inside the refrigerator, turn off the kitchen lights, and close the door.
If you can see obvious light escaping around the gasket, there's a good chance that area isn't sealing properly.
One Important Point
A dollar bill pulling out easily doesn't automatically mean the entire gasket needs to be replaced. Sometimes the gasket is simply dirty, warped, or not sitting correctly against the cabinet.
Clean the gasket and the mating surface with warm water and mild dish soap, dry it thoroughly, and test it again.
