Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and melanoma cases are being diagnosed in younger patients more often than many people realize. UC Davis Health dermatologist Dr. Oma Agbai explains the warning signs of skin cancer, how to spot melanoma early, and the ABCDEs of melanoma that everyone should know. Learn what changes in a mole or skin spot should prompt a visit to a board-certified dermatologist, including asymmetry, irregular borders, color changes, large diameter, and evolution over time.

Dr. Agbai also shares important skin cancer prevention tips, including how to properly use sunscreen, why SPF 30 matters, how often sunscreen should be reapplied, and why tanning beds increase the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers. Whether you have fair skin, medium skin, or dark skin, protecting your skin from UV exposure is important.
