Simple DIY how to: Remove, inspect, and replace the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve on a Ford Duratec HE or Mazda LF engine.
EGR valves get dirty over time along with the rest of the intake and exhaust components, and it's good practice to service them by just cleaning from time to time. Dirty or clogged EGR valves can lead to irregular or surging idle and engine tune problems - stuck open is similar to a vacuum leak which means poor idling, misfiring, or stalling; stuck closed can lead to knocking and timing problems.
If it's just clogged you can try to clean with carb cleaner. Ideally you should soak the body overnight (keep cleaner away from the electronics). Nb. this video only shows inspection of the valve without removing it fully from the engine cooling hose.
Failure will mean replacement is necessary. Computer codes may be set so these should be checked with a scan tool first.

You will need:
- Screwdriver blade or similar to release air intake clip, and long nose pliers to redo
- 10 mm socket and 1/4" universal socket with 1/4" or 3/8" wrench and short extension bar
- Carb cleaner
- Rag(s)
- Flashlight.
