Studies show that experienced weightlifters can know very accurately how many reps they are from hitting failure during a set. One of they keys to making good progress in the gym is to avoid training to complete failure, leaving a full rep or half a rep in the tank is usually very helpful.
A few researchers developed a scale known as Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and it's based on repetitions in reserve. Aim to train with an RPE of 7 to 9.5.
