About this video: This video is our complete guide on how to install Java on Windows, and the process is exactly the same whether you are on a PC or a laptop. If you have a .jar file like a Minecraft mod loader or a server file that just won't open, this will get it working.
First things first, let's cover what the problem actually looks like. When you hover over a .jar file, it should say something like "Executable Jar File," but when you double-click on it, nothing happens. On top of that, you probably don't even have the Java icon on the file. It may just look like a piece of paper, which is the default file icon in Windows, and there is no Java to select when you try to open it. That means you don't have Java, so let's fix that.
You can find a link in the description above to our complete guide on getting Java. Once you are there, just click the "Download Java 25" button. You can also search "Java JDK download" to find the official Java downloads page, which is the same place our website will take you.
On the download page, we recommend getting the most recent version, which can be JDK 26. That being said, JDK 25 is technically the most stable release, so it is going to be the longest supported version for a while. Either one will work here. With your version selected, click on "Windows." Then, next to the "x64 Installer," click the long download link and Java will begin downloading. You may need to keep or save the file depending on your browser.
Once that is downloaded, it will be in your downloads folder. Double-click on the Java installer and it installs like any other program. Click next a few times, agree to the terms along the way, and the installation will begin. It truly is that easy. When it is finished, click close, and you can even delete the file you downloaded.
At this point, you should be able to double-click on a .jar file like the Fabric installer and have it open right up. In some cases it still won't work though, and in that case you will want to run the Jarfix. This is just a little file that links the .jar files on your computer back to Java once Java is installed.

From there, go to your downloads folder and double-click the Jarfix to run it like any other program. You will get a message that the .jar suffix has been registered to Java, and you are good to go. You can delete the Jarfix after that as well. Now, double-clicking on something like the Fabric installer will just work.
