About this video: To get started dedicating more RAM to Minecraft Java Edition, open up the Minecraft Launcher. Then, in the launcher, go to “Installations” at the top. Here, you will see all of your Minecraft Installations. This works for any version included modded versions like Forge, Fabric, or even CurseForge.
Click the three dots on the version you want. To add RAM to and click “Edit”. Scroll down on the menu that appears and click “More Options”. You will now see a “JVM Arguements”. At the beginning of this text box, there will be “-Xmx2G”. There may be a different number though. The reason is that is the amount of RAM you have in Minecraft.
To increase your RAM in Minecraft Java, just change this number to the RAM you want to dedicate. For example “-Xmx4G” will be 4GB. “-Xmx6G” will be 6GB. However, how much RAM should you actually add?
Well, it depends on what you are doing in Minecraft. For example, vanilla Minecraft can run on 2-4GB of RAM no problem. When you start adding mods, 4GB becomes the minimum with 6GB needed once you cross the 50 to 100 mod mark. Over a hundred mods, you’ll need 8GB no doubt, and you may need even more RAM as you add more mods. I’ve seen modpacks with hundreds of mods need 10GB of RAM or more.
However, never add more than half of the RAM you have in your PC to Minecraft. To check this, open up the “System Information” app. Here, you’ll see an “Installed Physical Memory (RAM)” section. Never add more than half the amount here to Minecraft.
With that, you can launch the game, and press F3. You will see your RAM (Memory) in the top left or right when you open the F3 menu depending on if you are in single player or on server. If you have any questions, let us know in the comments.
