How can we achieve a 'dark and smoky' sound? Well honestly, it isn't easy. If your sound concept is bright and powerful, playing dark and smoky can seem a formidable challenge. Some, and Chet Baker is a classic example, can produce a compelling, breathy tone with small mouthpieces and normally bright horns... The rest of us may need help. I demo a couple of great mouthpieces here, Mark Curry's VC (Vintage Cornet) mouthpiece that offers a fairly dark and breathy tone (used on trumpet's with a cornet/trumpet adpapter), and Bob Reeves C2J, in my opinion the best (darkest) trumpet/flugel mouthpiece on the market. I also demo a Bronze MK Radial tuning slide (braceless) with a couple of Stradivarius trumpets - and it's a great tuning slide too. I play the following horns, and the right horn can help:
1. Olds Recording Cornet with the Curry VC mouthpiece: 4:05
2. Bach Strad L Bore 25 bell: 5:30 (Played first with a GR64MS, Curry VC, Reeves C2J)
and with the MK Bronze Tuning Slide at 10:50
3. Mt. Vernon Bach Strad M Bore 38(?) bell: 13:15 (First with the Curry VC, GR64MS, then Reeves C2J)
4. Edwards Gen II: 16:15 (Curry VC, then Reeves C2J Mouthpieces)
5. The American Belle Puje by Brent Peters: 19:00 (Curry VC, Reeves C2J)
