As wildfires get increasingly bigger, larger, faster, and more destructive, our approach to fighting them becomes increasingly important. And since most wildfires occur on public lands, the fire management techniques we use on them will become increasingly important as well.
Decades of fire suppression, unsustainable development patterns, and especially climate change have completely altered the impact wildfires have on our lives. But as we learn more about the role fire has historically played on the landscape, and our own role in suppressing them, we can begin to adapt the way we fight them.
This video gives an overview of how wildfires are started, the ways in which wildfires spread, why wildfires are getting worse, and how we fight wildfires on public lands.
