How to become the SUPERHUMAN that NEVER GETS SICK || Superimmunity by Joel Fuhrman (Book Review)

In today's video I want to talk about the book "Superimmunity" by Joel Fuhrman, he has also written other amazing books such as "eat to live" which I will present in another video.

This book is pretty simple but also pretty powerful. He talks about how to not get sick and how to strengthen your immune system and overall immunity.

The interesting thing is, if your strengthen your immune system, you don't just stop to get colds, you also decrease the risk for various diseases such as cancer, so our immune system plays also an important role in cancer prevention.

How does this work?

By strengthening your immune system with phytonutrients, phytochemicals and antioxidants you will be able to neutralize oxidative stress in your body by neutralizing free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules that get formed when we get toxins in our bodies or also experience different stressors. These free radicals are highly reactive and can damage our cells and macronutrients in our food. They damage them because they have an unpaired electron that is highly reactive.

But by eating phytochemicals, phytonutrients and antioxidants with our diet we will neutralize these free radicals by binding to their unpaired electron.

So we just need to now where to get these antioxidants, phytonutrients and phytochemicals.

Funny enough, they are mostly present in green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale, spinach but also berries and in a lesser degree in fruits and other plant foods.

They give these plant foods their color, so the more darker the blue, red and green of these foods is, the better.

What also helps against free radicals is the compound sulforaphane that is present in all cruciferous vegetables.

By crushing, chewing or chopping these vegetables we will activate a chemical reaction that will release this compound. If you cook these vegetables first you won't get that compound.

So as a general advice: Eat them raw or crush/chop them (destroy the cell walls) before you cook them.

Last but not least the author talks about his nutrition pyramid, which I'm a big fan of.

He calls himself a "nutritarian" and not a "vegan" or something because his overall view on food and eating is pretty simple:

Eat food with the highest micronutrient and antioxidant density.
Which basically means stick to food that is naturally produced, not processed and mostly plant-based, he advocates a diet of max 10% calories coming from animal products.

The reason being is that a steak doesn't contain antioxidants (almost none) and by limiting your animal product consumption you will automatically eat more plants and get more antioxidants, phytochemicals and phytonutrients in your diet.
