Solitude is associated with creativity, insight, and emotional balance.
If you’re anything like me though, you may think solitude requires going to a cabin in the woods like Thoreau. Let’s face it: who’s got time for that?
But I came across a different description that I really resonated with. In their book Lead Yourself First, Raymond Kethledge and Michael Erwin define solitude as: “A subjective state in which your mind is free from input from other minds.”
You can do this anywhere. Going for a run, sipping on a coffee outside, journaling, meditating.
The key is that you focus on your own thoughts and experiences, instead of reacting to information created by other people.
You can be alone in the woods but reading tweets, or listening to a podcast. Those are inputs from other minds. On the other hand, you could practice solitude by sitting on a crowded subway, simply looking around.
Where’s your head at when you’re alone?
