About this video: Backing up your Minecraft world is one of the easiest ways to make sure you do not lose hours of progress if something goes wrong. In this video, we show you how to backup Minecraft worlds, where Minecraft stores those backups, and how to restore a world from a backup when you need it.
To make a backup, open Minecraft and go to Singleplayer. Click the world you want to backup once without joining it, then click “Edit”. On the Edit World screen, click “Make Backup”. Minecraft will create a backup of your world, although larger worlds that you have played for a long time can take a bit longer to finish.
If you want to find the backup file itself, minimize Minecraft and open the Minecraft Launcher. Go to “Installations”, find the Minecraft installation you use, and click the folder icon. This opens your Minecraft folder. Inside, open the “backups” folder, and you will find the backups you have created.
Keep in mind that Minecraft does not automatically create one every time you play, so you will want to make backups regularly. When loading an older world, Minecraft may also give you the option to “Create Backup and Load”, which is usually worth doing before continuing.
For automatic backups, we also cover SimpleGameHosting in the video. Minecraft servers hosted there include automatic daily backups, so you do not have to remember to manually backup your server world before something goes wrong.
What if you actually need to restore one of your Minecraft backups? Find the backup you want in the backups folder, right-click it, and select “Extract All”. Once it has been extracted, open the resulting folders until you find the actual Minecraft world folder. You can move this somewhere easy to access, such as your desktop.
Go back to your Minecraft folder using the Minecraft Launcher and open the “saves” folder. Drag-and-drop the world folder you extracted into your saves folder. If Windows asks whether you want to replace files in the destination, confirm that you want to replace them so the backed-up files are restored.
