About this video: Before you allocate more RAM to Minecraft, we need to answer how much RAM you actually need.
This is going to depend on what you are doing. For vanilla, 2GB to 4GB is typically enough unless you are super complex redstone automation.
Mods is where the RAM demand really increases. As soon as you add any mods, you need 4GB. Cross over 50, and 6GB is usually need. 100+ mods are going to need 8GB, and I’ve see some heavy modpacks need 10GB or even 16GB of RAM to run without issues.
Also, never add more than half of the amount of RAM you have in your computer to Minecraft. You can see your PC’s RAM by opening “System Information” and looking for Installed Physical Memory.
With that info, open up the Minecraft Launcher because it’s now time to give some more RAM to Minecraft.
Go to the “Installations” tab and edit the installation you want to add RAM to. This works the exact same way for vanilla and modded.
After that, scroll down and click “more options”. You will see a “JVM arguments” text box, and at the beginning, you will see “-Xmx2G”. The number might be different. The number here is the amount of RAM dedicated to Minecraft. Changing this to “-Xmx4G” for 4GB for example. After you have sent your RAM, save the installation.
In-game, you can press F3 and see the RAM you have added to the game and how much is being used and how much you have dedicated.
