About this video: If your Minecraft shaders are missing, refuse to activate, cause errors, or make the game too laggy to play, this video walks through the most common ways to fix them. We cover the shader mod itself, your shader pack files, performance settings, graphics drivers, and mod conflicts so you can get shaders working correctly again.
Start by making sure you are using Iris Shaders instead of OptiFine. Download the Iris Windows Installer, close Minecraft, and run the installer. Once Iris is installed, open the Minecraft Launcher and play using the Iris installation. Keep in mind that Iris only adds support for shaders. You will still need to download and install a shader pack before you see any visual changes in-game.
If your shader packs are not appearing, open Minecraft with Iris and go to Options, Video Settings, Shader Packs, and click “Open Shader Pack Folder.” Move the shader pack you downloaded directly into this folder. You will also want to make sure the pack is not buried inside an extra folder. When you open the shader pack file, you should immediately see a “shaders” folder, along with any other files included by the pack.
A shader pack can also be installed correctly and still not work with your version of Minecraft or Iris. Try downloading a different shader pack or updating your current pack to its newest available release. Older shader packs may continue working for several Minecraft versions, but compatibility problems become more likely as the pack gets further out of date.
Performance can be another issue. Select your shader pack from the Shader Packs menu and click “Shader Pack Settings.” Look for the profile option and change it from Ultra or High to a lower profile. This reduces some of the more demanding lighting and visual effects while making the shader pack much easier for your computer to run.
You should also update your graphics drivers through the NVIDIA App or the software provided for your AMD graphics card. Finally, temporarily remove other visual and performance mods to confirm that your shader pack works without them. Some mods can conflict with shaders, meaning you may need to stop using either the conflicting mod or the shader pack.
