also, in their version, it's poe who says the iconic line! I liked letting rose still say it because im love her but it provides beautiful character progress for poe if he says it instead, it's true (though just saving finn in itself would've added so much to his arc)
in a perfect world i would’ve edited a million screencaps and fancy stuff during my voiceover sections but in a perfect world i would not have filmed over an hour and a half of rambling that didn’t make sense and then decided not to rerecord with a script but instead to wrestle with it for two weeks and end up with a GIANT
this is not a review it is a monstrosity and i apologize to your ears and eyes, but for some reason i still want to post it
in case ur like "alexandra why did u say at the end that it's a good movie when u spend the whole thing explaining why u don't like it" well...good is subjective. i had a fun time in theatres watching it and i get really excited talking about it--both the good and bad things. it may be kiiiiinnddda shite but it actually amped up my enthusiasm for star wars instead of killing it, and maybe that's just because i love to be mad about things, but who knows! every time I talk to someone who loved it I'm like "wow, try" and every time I talked to someone who hated it I'm like "u have never been more right" so I am truly split on this hell fire movie lol
other things alexandra forgot to put in review or didn’t extrapolate on:
-the fact that luke was like “nope” after kylo was like “you here to save my soul?” because look, just because i think luke wouldn’t try to kill him in his sleep does not mean that i don’t think that luke acknowledging when someone is beyond his ability to save does not make sense with how his character has been developed. darth vader acted instinctively to save his son and found redemption right before he died in the truth that there was still good in him. but kylo acted to save rey earlier in the film and then still went Back on his Bullshit right after he was done, no matter how much ~good~ may be in him, or used to be in him!! luke may not have been there, but there’s no way he didn’t sense some of what went down with rey and kylo, not a luke so powerful he can astral project himself across the galaxy. luke knew kylo was somewhere where he could not be saved by another person—where his salvation would have to come through himself, or not at all. So Luke said sorry for failing him but in that last showdown he didn’t try to pull him back to the light and I respected that.
-the fact that after rey spends the whole movie separated from Finn, attempting to find belonging with two different people who disappoint her—luke by not being the mentor or legend she thought he’d be, and kylo ren by turning out to be nothing like her when she’d thought they were the same—she gets to have Finn come hurtling back into her arms, Finn, who has never considered her nothing and is living proof that kylo ren was wrong, and is everything good that kylo ren was trying to cut her off from. Seeing her get to reunite with Finn after her storyline being filled with so much turmoil and self-doubt was beautiful, and showed that when maz said to her in the force awakens that “the belonging you seek is ahead of you not behind”, it was Finn and the resistance she meant, not kylo ren.
