Skincare is not just about vanity - it could extend your lifespan too!
Science now shows us that damaged skin with signs of inflammation like dryness and redness actually has the potential to accelerate aging in our bodies and even impact our lifespan if it is allowed to continue unchecked.
Short-term inflammation in response to injury or something like a skin treatment is beneficial to support healing whereas chronic or longer term inflammation is unhelpful to us.
Scientists explain there is a cascading effect where if we have inflammation in the skin then what are called inflammatory cytokines which are signaling molecules that trigger inflammation can enter the blood stream from our skin adding to overall inflammation levels in the body.
What we know is that chronic or ongoing inflammation raises our risk of disease and accelerates aging.
So it’s important to protect our skin from sun damage and keep it well hydrated in particular.
The good news is researchers at the University of California San Francisco actually found in a clinical trial that just applying a low cost moisturizer twice daily that contained three types of lipids (cholesterol, free fatty acids, and ceramides) – after one month blood levels of inflammatory cytokines on trial participants were reduced, suggesting that restoring the skin barrier and rehydrating skin can help reverse the effects of what we now call inflammaging.
