Have you noticed that almost every shark-conservation video touts that sharks are an important part of the ecosystem? We know they consume a lot of energy on reefs, right? But how do we know that? How do we know how much energy a shark consumes? How would you calculate that if you couldn't sit on the reef and physically count the types of fish a shark is eating?
I wanted to see how shark scientists, like my friend Dr. Nick Whitney, study shark metabolism and thus aim to figure out how important sharks are in the food web.
