In 1841, Vice President John Tyler became the first vice president in United States history to ever be faced with the death of the sitting president. Tyler’s vice presidency was short. William Henry Harrison death only came a month after he took the Presidential Oath of Office.
Article II of the Constitution made mention of the succession of power in case of the President’s death, but left the exact role of the Vice President vague. Controversially, Vice President Tyler would immediately have himself sworn in as the eleventh President of the United States.
This led to numerous nicknames such as his accidency and Tyler being considered an Accidental President. But more importantly bitter resentments as no one expected the Virginian Whig and slaveholder to be president. However, Tyler insisted on nothing less than his established presidency.
John Tyler explained to William Henry Harrison’s cabinet that he would be in charge of the executive office and would make his own decisions. He also clashed with Senator Henry Clay who never expected a John Tyler presidency. The clash ultimately forced Tyler out of the Whig Party making him a president without a party.
The precedent set by Tyler defined the nation’s future. Influential, controversial and beloved presidents would enter the office only because the presiding president had died.
Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson had run together on the same ticket, but the two had very different views. When Lincoln died only months into his second term the monumentous task of Reconstruction Andrew Johnson would handle this in a controversial way which showed much more leniency with the south. The Andrew Johnson presidency would put him at odds with several other prominent Republicans such as Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes.
Vice President Theodore Roosevelt likely would never have taken the office if it weren’t for the assassination of William McKinley. Governor Roosevelt was strongly disliked by leaders in the Republican Party. They offered Roosevelt with the Vice presidency simply to get him out of their way. They never suspected he would actually ascend to the office in 1901 become a Progressive Republican President.
