A bizarre piece of presidential lore revolves around the multiple instances of President Abraham Lincoln's ghost making appearances over the decades. The most prominent ghost sighting is the one that was actually photographed, that is when Former First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was photographed with an apparition which was claimed to be the spirit of her dead husband.
The story comes from a chapter in the history of spirit photography. During the mid-1860s and following the American Civil War there were not only untold and countless Americans grieving the losses of family members but also a rise in spiritualism and spiritualistic beliefs. People were desperate to get in touch with their dead family members in any way they could.
Spirit photography or ghost photography provided people with a solution as they could be photographed with ghostly figures which were claimed to be their husbands, children, wives, cousins, etc. Ghost photography in America was massively popular and many photos with ghostly figures from this era still exist today. While today people may consider these creepy pictures at the time many found them comoforting.
Mary Todd was a prime customer for the practice. She already had unusual spiritual beliefs. She'd even held séances in the White House to try to connect with the spirits of her deceased children Eddy Lincoln and William Lincoln. The man responsible for the Lincoln ghost photo was William Howard Mumler.
Among the prominent spirit photographers were Édouard Isidore Buguet, William Hope, David Duguid and Edward Wyllie. Many of these men were proven to be frauds however William Mumler was never outed as a fraud - not even in a court of law. He is among the few ghost photographer never to be definitively exposed.
The photo is considered fraudulent, but it's unconfirmed status leaves it a mystery and leaves some hopeful that the ghost of a beloved President still may be lurking the earth. It also remains in Weird American History.
