Augustin Jean Fresnel solved the problem of giant heavy lenses by removing most of their unnecessary glass. The remaining curved sections could be compressed into a compact Fresnel lens that bends light like a much thicker conventional lens.

Placed around the lighthouse lamp with additional lenses above and below it the system captures far more light and creates concentrated beams. As the lantern rotates those beams sweep across the sea in a recognisable flash pattern.
