Larger hydrofoils use fully submerged foils, positioned deep enough that surface waves have less effect on their lift. This allows a much smoother ride in rougher water.

These systems require sensors, computers, and hydraulic actuators to constantly adjust the foil angle, keeping the vessel level and at the correct flying height.
