Although wide hulls supply excellent stability, they generate immense hydrodynamic drag and dramatically increase continuous fuel consumption. Trimarans completely resolve this conflict by separating functions across three hulls: the center hull remains exceptionally narrow to slice through water efficiently, while the side outriggers do the stabilizing work.

In calm waters, the narrow outriggers sit wide from the centerline and barely touch the surface to prevent drag. However, when wind or wave forces push the ship sideways, the leeward outrigger submerges deep into the water column, instantly creating an isolated buoyant push acting on a long lever arm to forcefully stop the vessel from rolling.
